Arewa group launches free health check initiative in Lagos

Published on

The Northern Progressive Group (NPG), South West Zone, has flagged off a state-wide free medical checkup and healthy living awareness campaign aimed at boosting local healthcare capacity and improving access to medical services.

The programme, tagged Arewa Community Health Check, was launched last Saturday at Aguda, Surulere, Lagos. It is a proud initiative of the National APC Women Leader, Hajiya Ramatu Lawal.

The exercise, which focused on blood pressure and blood sugar screening, attracted over 200 participants including market women, traders, youths, landlords, and residents of the area, who trooped to the venue as early as 9 a.m.

The medical team, led by Matron Ibilola Dosunmu, commenced the health checks at exactly 11 a.m. with clear instructions and objectives. The Chairman of the occasion, Alhaji Dahiru Musa, translated the proceedings into Hausa for participants.
Speaking at the event, Alhaji Musa explained:

“The health screening exercise, which involves measuring blood pressure and blood sugar, plays an essential role in reducing the risk of serious health problems.”
On her part, Mrs. Dosunmu educated participants on the importance of the tests, saying:

“Blood pressure refers to the force that blood exerts on the walls of blood vessels as the heart pumps, while blood sugar is the main sugar found in the blood, coming from the food we eat. It is the body’s main source of energy. We are conducting these checks under the umbrella of the Northern Progressive Group to create awareness in local government areas and communities across Lagos. This will help residents live healthier lives and increase life expectancy.”

Alhaji Musa also paid tribute to the sponsor and NPG South West Leader, Hajiya Ramatu Lawal, describing her as a selfless philanthropist committed to humanitarian service. He praised her “sacrifice, compassion, and unwavering dedication to humanity.”

Other notable community leaders present at the event—including Hajiya Maryam Adamu, Hajiya Maryam Abubakar, Ahmed Tijani Sulaiman, and Alhaji Waziri Usman—also lauded Hajiya Ramatu as “a bridge builder with compassion, purpose, and dedication to service.”

Health experts at the event emphasized that regular blood pressure and blood sugar tests are critical for families and communities. They warned that uncontrolled levels could lead to serious conditions such as heart attacks, heart failure, and stroke.
The initiative is expected to extend to other communities across Lagos State in the coming weeks, reinforcing the NPG’s commitment to grassroots healthcare and preventive medicine.
