The Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, has urged President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, in the interest of justice and national reconciliation.

In a communique issued after its General Meeting, Afenifere described Kanu as a “political detainee” and stated that his continued detention without trial is unjustifiable. The group cited controversial and conflicting legal proceedings in different courts, which may compromise Kanu’s right to a fair trial.
Afenifere’s call for Kanu’s release comes as the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders’ Forum (SMBLF) also presses President Tinubu to restructure Nigeria and enthrone “true federalism”.
In addition to demanding Kanu’s release, Afenifere reiterated its call for the creation of state police to address the nation’s insecurity challenges. The group emphasized that Nigeria’s vast territory, population, and federal structure cannot be effectively secured with a single command unitary police structure.
The meeting also approved the appointment of Dele Farotimi as the National Organising Secretary of Afenifere.
Afenifere’s demands echo growing concerns about Nigeria’s security and justice systems.

The group’s call for state police and Kanu’s release highlights the need for bold, positive, and ideological steps to ensure genuine protection of life and property across the country.
