A Devastating accident occurred on the Odo Iya-Alaro Bridge in Lagos, when a private ambulance conveying a pregnant woman on oxygen support drove against traffic and collided with a delivery motorcyclist, leaving the rider with a severe leg fracture.
The incident, which happened Monday, also left the pregnant woman injured, and she was rushed to the hospital in another vehicle. According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), a truck had earlier caught fire at the same location, causing a major traffic disruption.
LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs, Adebayo Taofiq, explained that the ambulance driver, who was driving against traffic, collided with the motorcyclist who was on his proper lane.
“In an expeditious and meticulously coordinated emergency intervention, LASTMA officers alerted the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), which promptly deployed two ambulances to the scene,” Taofiq said.
The pregnant woman was safely transferred to one LASAMBUS ambulance, while the injured motorcyclist was taken to the nearest medical facility in another. The ambulance driver was apprehended and handed over to the police for interrogation and prosecution.
LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, condemned the ambulance driver’s actions, stating, “We have zero tolerance for driving against traffic. Ambulance operators and emergency service drivers must adhere to safety protocols to avoid tragedies on Lagos roads”.
