Ooni of Ife condemns Ibadan stampede, promises support for victims’ families

Urges organisers to learn from tragic incident, not be discouraged

The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, has condemned the tragic stampede that occurred at a yuletide event in Ibadan, resulting in the death of 32 children ¹.

The traditional ruler has pledged support for the victims’ families and urged the organisers not to be discouraged by the unfortunate incident.

In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Moses Olafare, the Ooni expressed his heartfelt sympathy to the government of Oyo State, the organisers, and the bereaved families. He also commended the Oyo State Government for its prompt response to the incident.

The Ooni stressed the need for collaborative efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of children across Nigeria.

He called for immediate action to prevent such incidents in the future, emphasizing the need for rigorous adherence to safety standards and child welfare policies in educational institutions.

Oba Ogunwusi also encouraged the organisers, including his ex-wife, Queen Naomi Ogunseyi, and popular Ibadan radio owner, Oriyomi Hamzat, to remain committed to doing laudable programmes for children, but with better plans and strategies of execution in the future.

The Ooni’s pledge of support comes as the Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of the former queen, the radio owner, and other organisers of the event ¹.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for greater accountability and safety measures to prevent such tragedies in the future.
