Chief Ezekiel Nwifuru Nwankpu, father of Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, has been crowned the traditional ruler of Oferekpe Agbaja Autonomous Community in Izzi Local Government Area, marking a significant milestone in his remarkable life. With 30 wives and 108 children, his family’s story is one of resilience, hard work, and determination.
The Chairman of the occasion and former Minister of Power Chief Godwin Ogbaga, described the installation of Nwifuru Nwankpu as the traditional ruler of the community as most commendable considering his contributions to societal development, particularly in the Izhi clan.
Ogbaga said the credit for Ezeogo Nwankpu’s coronation goes to his son, who is currently the state governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru, whom he said had created an enabling environment for the exercise by signing into law the document creating the communities as demanded and approved.
The ceremony attracted who is who within and outside the state including the former governors of the state; Dr. Sam, Chief Martin Elechi and Senator David Umahi. Others include the three senators and six House of Reps representing the state at National Assembly. The state executives council members, Local Government Chairmen, Coordinators and other government appointees, among others.
A Life of Hard Work and Perseverance
Chief Nwankpu’s journey began as a successful farmer, whose prosperity sparked envy and intimidation from his community. Despite facing humiliation and ostracization, he remained focused on his goals, marrying multiple wives who became his companions and helping hands in achieving his dreams. Today, 17 of his wives remain by his side.
A Family of Achievers
Twenty-one of Chief Nwankpu’s children, including Governor Francis Nwifuru, are university graduates, a testament to the family’s commitment to education. The governor proudly acknowledged that his father’s wives and children worked tirelessly to train themselves, with the support of their mothers.

As Chief Nwankpu ascends to the royal stool, his son, Governor Nwifuru, urged him to prioritize peace, equity, and justice within the community. He advised his father to lead with generosity and fairness, without seeking revenge or perpetuating injustice ².
