The Nigerian Navy has launched a significant operation to enhance maritime security and boost oil production in the Niger Delta region.
Exercise “DEIN ABAJI,” meaning “Calm Waters” in the Kalabari language, commenced on Sunday in Onne, Rivers State, with the deployment of 15 warships and three surveillance helicopters.
Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, Chief of Naval Staff, emphasized the navy’s commitment to securing the maritime borders and protecting the maritime environment for national economic prosperity.

He noted that the exercise aims to curb maritime threats, improve security in the Gulf of Guinea and support domestic and regional maritime security initiatives.
Ogalla highlighted the navy’s efforts to intensify cooperation with maritime stakeholders through information sharing, strengthening collective capabilities to achieve national security objectives.
“I am confident that the exercise will positively impact our readiness for combat operations and expose other maritime agencies to the benefits of interagency cooperation,” he stated.
The Nigerian Navy’s maritime security operations have already led to significant improvements in legitimate shipping activities due to reduced crimes in Nigerian waters. Several companies have reported a 100% terminal factor, indicating a rise in oil production.
Rear Admiral Saheed Akinwande, Flag Officer Commanding Eastern Naval Command, outlined the exercise’s objectives, including Anti-Piracy and Anti-COT Operations, Fleet Maneuvers/Emergency Drills and Amphibious Raid Exercises.
He expressed confidence in the outcome, stating that it will enhance collective efforts to protect Nigeria’s maritime interests.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Defence, Minister of State for Defence and Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara were commended for their support to the Nigerian Navy.
