Borno Deputy Governor Alhaji Umar Usman Kadafur and over 100 passengers narrowly escaped death when a Max Air plane’s engine caught fire 10 minutes after takeoff from Maiduguri International Airport on Wednesday evening.

The dramatic incident occurred around 7 pm, sparking panic as the pilot expertly executed an emergency landing back at the Maiduguri airport, ensuring the safety of everyone on board heading to Abuja.

According to a Max Air staff member, who wished to remain anonymous, the engine fire resulted from a bird strike shortly after takeoff. “The aircraft hit a bird in the sky, causing one of the engines to catch fire,” the staff member revealed.

Following the emergency landing, many passengers opted to retrieve their luggage and return home, while others waited for an alternative flight arranged by the airport authorities. Max Air swiftly mobilized another plane from Kano, which safely transported some passengers, including Deputy Governor Kadafur, to Abuja.

The ill-fated aircraft remains grounded at Maiduguri Airport for repairs and investigation. This incident raises concerns about aviation safety and the potential risks associated with bird strikes.
