Gov Zulum launches historic rail project

Published on

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has embarked on an ambitious project to construct an intra-city rail network, connecting Maiduguri and its environs.

This pioneering initiative makes Borno the first northern state in Nigeria to undertake such a project.

The rail network, which will commence with 12 designated terminals within Maiduguri, aims to connect major markets, schools, and public places, facilitating seamless movement of passengers and goods.

This project has the potential to transform the state’s economy, create jobs, and re-engineer the city’s transportation network.
According to Borno’s Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Mohammed Bamanga, feasibility studies, environmental risk assessments, and community consultations are underway to ensure the project’s success.

The commissioner emphasized that the project will not only provide an alternative, cost-effective means of transport but also support other ongoing transport infrastructural projects.

Governor Zulum’s commitment to infrastructural development in Borno is part of a larger strategy to restore peace and prosperity to the state after over a decade of Boko Haram insurgency. His administration has previously commissioned electric and gas-powered taxis and buses at subsidized rates to cushion the effects of the fuel subsidy removal.

As the people of Borno eagerly anticipate the completion of this historic project, they can take pride in knowing that their state is paving the way for a brighter, more prosperous future.
