BENIN CITY – The Edo State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised serious allegations against Governor Monday Okoebholo, accusing him of illegal actions over the past two weeks, including sending thugs to invade the private residence of former Governor Godwin Obaseki in a bid to recover government vehicles.
During a press conference at the party’s secretariat, PDP caretaker committee chairman Hon. Tony Azeigbemi condemned Okoebholo and the All Progressives Congress (APC) for allegedly deploying thugs to attack the PDP secretariat, aiming to steal and destroy critical court documents related to the recent governorship election.

“It is most unfortunate and disappointing that in just 14 days in office, the governor-select, Monday Okoebholo, through his actions and inactions, has succeeded in setting a dangerous tone for crisis and breach of public peace,” Azeigbemi stated. “We are worried that this troubling precedent may just be an ignition for a conflagration that may well be avoided.”
Azeigbemi detailed incidents of violence, including a recent attack on the PDP secretariat on Airport Road, which he claimed was orchestrated by the APC to intimidate the party’s efforts to reclaim its electoral mandate. He further alleged that thugs, described as “government vehicle recovery agents,” led by APC chieftain Kelty Okungbowa, stormed Obaseki’s residence in a “Gestapo style,” harassing security personnel present.
“This is most reprehensible and unacceptable,” Azeigbemi urged, calling on security agencies to investigate these “barbaric attacks” and hold the perpetrators accountable. “We condemn this act in the strongest terms. We are not surprised at these acts of lawlessness as it is in their party DNA.”
Additionally, Azeigbemi accused Okoebholo and his deputy, Rt. Hon. Dennis Idahosa, of violating constitutional norms by failing to resign from their positions in the Senate and House of Representatives after being elected to their current roles. He criticized the new administration for not paying November salaries, despite the previous PDP government leaving over N30 billion in state coffers.
In response, Okoebholo’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, dismissed the PDP’s claims, asserting that the party is struggling to adjust to its new role as the opposition. “The depleted and disorganized party ought to be apologizing to Edo people for mismanaging their resources,” Itua said. He added that Okoebholo is committed to developing Edo State and has already begun addressing issues left unresolved by the previous administration.
“The factional chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party in Edo State is yet to accept the clear reality that it has assumed the arduous role of an opposition party,” Itua stated, promising that the alleged “rot and fraud” of the PDP and Obaseki would soon be exposed.
As tensions rise in Edo State, both parties remain entrenched in their positions, with the PDP calling for accountability and Okoebholo’s administration defending its actions and intentions.
