A violent confrontation erupted in Onitsha, Anambra State, leaving three people feared dead and several others injured. The clash occurred between Anambra State revenue collectors and an angry mob at Old Market Road by Venn Road North, Onitsha.

According to eyewitnesses, the trouble began when revenue officials chased a tipper driver, demanding payment. In the process, the driver lost control, ramming into a pedestrian and killing them on the spot.

The incident sparked outrage among onlookers, mostly youths, who formed a mob and attacked the revenue officials with clubs, stones, and sticks. Two revenue agents were reportedly killed in retaliation.

Mr. Jackson, an eyewitness, described the revenue collectors as “touts” who have been terrorizing motorists in the area. “They were pursuing a tipper, and some of them jumped into the driver’s seat, dragging the steering with the driver. The driver lost control, and the vehicle hit a passerby, killing him instantly,” he recounted.

The police intervened, picking up the dead officials and rushing the injured to a hospital. The Onitsha police Area Commander, Mr. Nzota Chidi, confirmed the incident, lamenting that his warnings to the revenue agents had fallen on deaf ears.

The Divisional Police Officer, DPO, Central Police Station, Onitsha, Nnamdi Anabike, CSP, also confirmed the incident, stating that only one person was killed by the tipper.
