THE De Renaissance Patriots Foundation, a group of eminent Lagos indigenes, has reiterated its call to the Lagos State House of Assembly to address constitutional infractions in the Lagos State Law on Local Governments Administration.

In a press statement made available to The Reporter, the group expressed concerns that the proposed law does not fully return the constitutionally specified roles and sources of revenues of local governments, which have been taken over by the state government since 1999.

The Foundation noted that the Amendment of the Lagos State Law on Local Government Administration Bill, which seeks to reverse the state’s 57 LGAs/LCDAs to 20-Local Government Structure, still contains provisions that are inconsistent with the Constitution. Specifically, the Bill proposes to replace the 37 unconstitutional LCDAs with 37 new Area Administrative Councils, each headed by an Administrative Secretary appointed by the Governor.

The group urged the Lagos State House of Assembly to reconsider the Bill and ensure that it complies with the Constitution and the recent Supreme Court judgement on local government autonomy. The Foundation also called on the state government to hands off from the resources and financial obligations of local government authorities administration directly.

This call comes exactly one month after the Foundation sent its initial letter to the Assembly Speaker, raising 22 observations about the Bill. The group is still awaiting a response from the Assembly.
