Lagos traffic violation turns deadly as driver sets self, officer on fire

Published on

A shocking incident occurred in Lagos yesterday when an enraged driver set himself, a LASTMA officer, and a commercial bus on fire in an attempt to evade arrest for a traffic violation.

According to eyewitnesses, the driver, whose identity has not been disclosed, was stopped by a LASTMA officer for violating traffic rules. However, instead of complying with the officer’s instructions, the driver became aggressive and poured gasoline on himself, the officer, and the nearby bus.
“I was shocked when I saw the driver douse himself and the officer with fuel,” said an eyewitness who wished to remain anonymous. “Before we knew what was happening, he had set everything ablaze.”
The LASTMA officer, who suffered severe burns, was rushed to the hospital and is receiving treatment.
“We condemn this act of violence and brutality,” said a spokesperson for LASTMA. “Our officers are only doing their job to ensure public safety, and this kind of attack is unacceptable.”

The driver, who also suffered severe burns, was arrested and is currently in custody.
“This incident highlights the growing concern of violence against law enforcement officers,” said the Lagos State Police Commissioner.
“We will ensure that justice is served, and the perpetrator is held accountable for his actions.” Investigation into the incident is ongoing.
