Our govt has nothing against police — Fubara

•Says worst officer better than best criminal •Receives new CP, pledges support

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that his administration holds no grudges against the Nigeria Police Force, despite the troubling actions of some officers that have attempted to undermine governance in the state.

Governor Fubara made the declaration while hosting the new Commissioner of Police, Mustapha Bala, who was deployed to the Rivers State Command two weeks ago, at Government House in Port Harcourt on Friday.

He emphasized that, despite the unprofessional conduct of some police officers, his administration remained a steadfast partner of the police in ensuring the security of lives and property for all Rivers residents.

The Governor expressed his willingness to welcome the new Commissioner of Police, stating that collaboration between the police and other agencies was essential in the ongoing fight against crime.

“I can say that we are receiving you with open arms; that is the truth. We have no alternative. The worst of the police is still better than the best of criminals. We need to embrace you in every way because you are our allies. While we may have our differences, the most important thing is that the protection of lives and the security of the state are your responsibilities. We must work together, regardless of past issues.”

He added, “I want to clarify that this government, as it stands today, has no personal issues with the Nigeria Police Force, especially the Rivers State Command. I can confidently state that, despite past events, we have upheld our responsibility to support the Nigeria Police. We recognize the crucial role the police play in our state.”

Governor Fubara assured that his administration would continue to provide the necessary support to help the police succeed in their efforts to combat crime. In this regard, he urged the police to maintain professionalism, always act correctly, and resist being used against the law and peace of society.

Highlighting the importance of professionalism, Governor Fubara noted that with the prevailing peace in the state, the police have fewer challenges to address.

“This state is very peaceful. When you were here as Area Commander, you witnessed the situation then. Now that you are back as the CP, it is God who has brought you back to play your role in securing the lives and property of Rivers State residents. Perform that role professionally, and we will provide you with all the necessary support.”

Governor Fubara stated that the fight against criminals should focus on flushing them out of their hideouts, adding that if community policing is the right approach, it should be effectively utilized to minimize crime.
