The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has raised concerns over the increasing rate of cyber-criminality in Nigeria, warning that it poses significant threats to national security.

Speaking at a cybersecurity awareness campaign organized by the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, Egbetokun emphasized the need for collective action to combat cybercrime.
“The gathering of Cyber experts is a testament to our collective resolve and commitment to confronting cyber crime,” Egbetokun said. “As we embrace the digital age, we must also confront the stark reality that cyber threats pose significant threats to our national security.”
Director of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Centre, Uche Ifeanyi Henry, echoed Egbetokun’s sentiments, stressing that fighting cybercrime is a shared responsibility. “In today’s interconnected world, the importance of cybersecurity cannot be overstated,” Henry noted.
“Cybercrime knows no borders, and its impact can be felt across all sectors.”
Henry appreciated the participation of cybersecurity experts and government agencies, saying, “Your expertise is invaluable, and your dedication to this field is commendable. Your contributions have been instrumental in shaping the cybersecurity landscape.”
UNODC Deputy Representative in Nigeria, Danilo Campisi, emphasized the critical role of cybersecurity in human progress, justice, and security. “Cyberspace serves as a battlefield for illegal activity as well as a place for creativity,” Campisi said. “Through creative, integrated, and tailored solutions, UNODC is dedicated to assisting Member States in bolstering international responses to combat and prevent crimes.”
Campisi reiterated UNODC’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in creating a secure digital future through collaborative efforts on crime prevention, criminal justice reform, and capacity building.
