In a bid to address concerns and prepare for the 2025 Hajj, the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) held a virtual meeting with members of Private Tour Operators in Nigeria on September 20, 2024.

Led by Commissioner Operations Prince Anofi Elegushi, the meeting aimed to resolve issues and strengthen collaboration between NAHCON and private tour operators.

    Addressing Concerns, Fostering Cooperation

The meeting was a follow-up to NAHCON’s earlier engagement with AHUON leadership on September 10, 2024, where concerns over caution deposit refunds, offshore refunds, and Umrah visas were raised. Prince Elegushi explained that the caution deposit is meant to compensate pilgrims with genuine claims of disservice by tour operators ¹.

NAHCON clarified the refund process, stating that 139 out of 241 tour operators received refunds in 2023, while 70 requested roll-overs. As of the meeting, only 26 companies had applied for the 2024 refund. Prince Elegushi encouraged operators to apply for refunds or roll-overs for the next Hajj.

The resolutions at the meeting include Offshore Refunds and Umrah Visas: NAHCON is working with the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah to resolve issues related to offshore refunds and Umrah visa shortages.

On Hajj Development Levy, NAHCON explained that its Establishment Act prohibits cash withdrawals from the levy for individuals or organizations, instead focusing on funding projects beneficial to pilgrims and managers.

On the Lead Tour Operator Companies, it was said that Saudi MoHU reduced the number of lead tour operators for the 2025 Hajj from 40 to 20.

The AHUON’s request for registration deadline extension was granted.

Also, Both NAHCON and AHUON committed to enhancing communication and respecting each other’s roles to ensure smooth Hajj operations.

    Call to Action

NAHCON invites private tour operators with outstanding refund claims to submit evidence for necessary action. This move aims to promote transparency and accountability in Hajj operations.

By addressing concerns and fostering cooperation, NAHCON and AHUON are poised to ensure a successful and hitch-free 2025 Hajj experience for Nigerian pilgrims.
