OYO ASSEMBLY ON THE BRINK: Impeachment row, tensions hit boiling point

*Makinde tightens grip as lawmakers take sides in power struggleย

Published on

ABrewing impeachment saga has split Oyo State House of Assembly with some lawmakers openly declaring loyalty to Governor Seyi Makinde while others keep mum, fueling speculation of a brewing power struggle.ย

The drama began with whispers of impeachment plot,ย  but it rapidly escalated into a full-blown crisis, drawing keen attention from the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

At the center of the storm is a crucial meeting purportedly held at Governor Makinde’s residence, where lawmakers were said to have convened amid growing concerns over an alleged attempt to create a rift between the legislative and executive arms of government.

The meeting’s aftermath has seen some lawmakers publicly declare their positions, while others remain conspicuously silent, deepening uncertainty and fueling speculation of internal divisions.

Chief Whip Gbenga Oyekola has emerged as one of the most vocal figures, denying involvement in any plot against the governor. In a detailed statement on his verified Facebook account, he claimed the Speaker, Adebo Ogundoyin, had met with “influential political and traditional figures” seeking to sway his future ambitions.

Oyekola’s statement reads like a declaration of war, with him pledging “unwavering loyalty” to Makinde and vowing to defend the administration’s peace and stability agenda.

But questions linger: is this a genuine show of unity or a desperate bid to save face?ย  Some observers see Oyekola’s statement as a clever move to shift focus from potential divisions within the Assembly to an external threat. Others believe it’s a sign of Makinde’s tightening grip on power, with lawmakers falling in line to protect their interests.

The opposition APC is watching with bated breath, sensing an opportunity to pounce on the administration’s vulnerabilities. But for now, they’re playing it cool, monitoring the situation closely. “We’re watching developments, but we won’t comment on speculation,” an APC source said, hinting at a wait-and-see approach.

As events unfold, one thing’s clear: the stakes are high, and the outcome will significantly impact Oyo State’s future. ๐Ÿ‘€ Will Makinde weather the storm, or will the Assembly implode? The drama is far from over, and Nigeria’s political arena is glued to their screens.

Former governor Ayodele Fayose’s earlier warnings about potential instability are back in the spotlight, adding fuel to the fire. “He cautioned that there were attempts to destabilize the state,” a source close to Fayose revealed. Coincidence or prophecy?

As more lawmakers are expected to declare their positions in the coming days, the tension will only intensify. For now, all eyes are on Oyo State, where the battle for power has just gotten interesting. Stay tuned!.
