Power supply improved in two weeks, Minister insists

Published on

The Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, on Sunday insisted that electricity supply has improved in line with his earlier promise of better performance within two weeks, attributing the development to increased gas supply to power plants.

In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, the Minister said the gradual improvement in electricity supply reflects the commitment he made two weeks ago.

Sunday Vanguard had earlier reported widespread poor power supply across the country despite the Minister’s assurance.

However, Adelabu maintained that generation output recorded notable improvement between March 28 and April 10, 2026.

According to him, data from the period show that actual power generation rose from about 3,951 megawatts (MW) on March 28 to over 4,300MW by April 10, indicating a steady upward trend.

He explained that the increase in generation closely aligns with improved gas supply to thermal power plants, which grew from approximately 605 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) to over 704 mmscfd within the same period.

The Minister further noted that mechanical availability remained stable and even improved, peaking at over 7,796MW in early April, while operational availability increased from about 4,208MW to a peak of over 4,694MW, reflecting enhanced efficiency in converting available gas into electricity.

“Despite minor fluctuations recorded on some days, the overall trajectory points to a gradual recovery in the power sector, driven largely by improved gas supply and better coordination among critical stakeholders,” he said.

Adelabu stressed that the strong correlation between gas availability and power generation highlights the need for sustained interventions in the gas-to-power value chain, given the country’s heavy reliance on thermal power plants.

To consolidate the gains, Tunji disclosed that the Minister recently inaugurated a Gas-to-Power Monitoring Committee aimed at strengthening coordination, ensuring real-time monitoring, and sustaining gas supply to generation companies.

“The committee will address bottlenecks in gas delivery, enhance synergy between gas producers and power generation companies, and ultimately guarantee more stable and reliable electricity supply nationwide,” he said.

He added that the Minister remains committed to sustaining and improving the gains recorded in the coming weeks.

“We are not there yet, but we will continue to ensure measurable improvements,” Adelabu assured.

Meanwhile, the Minister has urged the new management of the Nigeria Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA) to improve its Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and reduce dependence on government appropriations.

He gave the charge during a visit by the agency’s newly appointed Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer, Engr. Olusegun Adesayo, and Board Chairman, Ikechi Nwosu, to his office over the weekend.

Adelabu also called for the establishment of additional meter testing centres across the country to strengthen NEMSA’s operations and regulatory effectiveness.

Expressing confidence in the new management, he assured them of his support and disclosed that the agency’s full board would be inaugurated this week.

Highlighting the shortage of skilled manpower, particularly meter installers, the Minister reiterated the need for collaboration between the National Power Training Institute of Nigeria (NAPTIN) and NEMSA to address the gap.

“We need to train more installers to accelerate the government’s plan to bridge the metering gap. We should also work towards establishing meter testing centres across all geo-political zones,” he said.
