Group petitions Tinubu, demands probe into alleged misconduct by Lagos CP

Published on

A Social Political organisation, The Renewal Group, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently establish a public inquiry into allegations of  land grabbing, abuse of office, and human rights violations allegedly linked to the office of Lagos State Commissioner of Police, CP, Moshood Jimoh.

In a letter dated March 16, 2026, and addressed to the President at the State House, Aso Rock Villa, Abuja, the group alleged that the current policing situation in Lagos State has deteriorated to a level that could pose serious security concerns if not immediately addressed.

The petition, titled “Urgent Request to Set Up a Public Inquiry into Cases of Land Grabbing, Abuse of Office, Abuse of Human Rights, Disobedience of Court Order and Illegal Demolition of Citizens’ Property,” accused the police commissioner of presiding over what the group described as “unprecedented lawlessness” in the state.

According to the group, the alleged activities involve the deployment of armed police officers alongside thugs to forcibly take over lands belonging to citizens across Lagos.

“We have come to realise that unless you intervene in policing in Lagos State, the present lawlessness as perpetuated by CP Moshood Jimoh may raise bigger security concerns in Lagos in a dimension the country has never witnessed before,” the group said in the letter.

The Renewal Group claimed that victims who attempt to resist such alleged land seizures are often arrested and prosecuted through mobile courts, which they said sometimes result in immediate detention at Kirikiri Correctional Centre.

The group stated in the petition that court orders obtained by property owners are allegedly ignored, making it difficult for citizens to pursue legal remedies.
“In instances where citizens secure a court order, such orders make no meaning to the Commissioner of Police. He will also decline to collect court processes, making it impossible for citizens to ventilate their pains in court,” the group alleged.

The organisation further claimed that multiple petitions previously sent to the Inspector-General of Police, the Police Service Commission, and other relevant authorities have remained unattended to.
As part of its claims, the group cited a recent incident involving a motorist who allegedly remains in detention after being accused of driving against traffic.

According to the petitioners, the man’s vehicle was allegedly taken by a police officer who drove it on a one-way route before the owner was later arrested and prosecuted.

“Recently, a car owner was alleged to have driven on one-way traffic when indeed it was the policeman that collected his car and drove it on one-way traffic. That citizen is presently in Kirikiri Prison as we write this letter,” the group claimed.

“We have since discovered those who are giving the Commissioner of Police backing… and they will be revealed during the public hearing,” the letter stated.
The Renewal Group urged President Tinubu to set up an independent public inquiry, saying such a move would expose the full extent of the alleged misconduct.

“Mr. President, if you set up this public hearing, you will be shocked to your marrow at the level of atrocities this Commissioner of Police has committed and how he has denigrated the Centre of Excellence,” the group said.
Lagos is widely referred to as Nigeria’s “Centre of Excellence.”

The organisation warned that failure to intervene could further erode public confidence in law enforcement institutions and worsen tensions within the state.

“Our hope is in you to hear innocent citizens and bring an end to this reckless lawlessness,” the group appealed.
The letter was signed by representatives of The Renewal Group, whose office is located at Triangle Mall Extension, Suite F26C, 58 Lekki-Epe Expressway, Lekki Peninsula II, Lagos.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from the Presidency, the Nigeria Police Force, or the Lagos State Police Command regarding the allegations.
