Ramadan Reflection 24: Signs of Lailatul Qadr

Among the most blessed nights of the year, Lailatul Qadr—the Night of Decree—is when Allah’s mercy descends abundantly, sins are forgiven, and destinies for the coming year are decreed. While the exact date is hidden, the Qur’an and Hadith provide believers with guidance to recognise this special night and seek its immense blessings.
The Qur’an describes Lailatul Qadr as:
“Indeed, We sent it [the Qur’an] down during the Night of Decree. And what can make you know what the Night of Decree is? The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.”
(Qur’an 97:1–3)
Scholars and Hadith literature highlight several signs that may help believers identify this night during the last ten nights of Ramadan, particularly on the odd nights. One of the clearest signs is peace and tranquility. The Prophet Muhammad (s a w) said:
“The night of Lailatul Qadr is a calm night, neither too hot nor too cold, and the sun rises on the next morning without harsh rays.”
(Muslim, Ahmad)
This serene atmosphere reflects the spiritual peace of the night. The sky often appears clear and bright, and there is a feeling of tranquility over the earth, signaling Allah’s mercy and presence.
Another sign is the ease of worship during the night. The believer finds that prayers, recitation of the Qur’an, and dhikr flow naturally, accompanied by a strong sense of nearness to Allah. The heart feels weightless, humble, and focused, as if the soul senses the extraordinary opportunity.
Lailatul Qadr is also a night when du‘as are accepted abundantly. The Prophet (s.a.w) advised:
“Whoever prays during Lailatul Qadr with faith and hoping for reward, all his past sins will be forgiven.”
(Bukhari & Muslim)
Believers are encouraged to increase Qiyamul-Layl, recitation of the Qur’an, and heartfelt supplications, seeking forgiveness, guidance, relief from hardship, and provision.
Other traditional signs include a sense of spiritual renewal, humility, and inner light or calmness in the heart during the night. While these are not physical certainties, they indicate a heightened receptivity to Allah’s mercy.
The key lesson is intentional devotion. Even if a believer cannot identify Lailatul Qadr precisely, sincere worship in the last ten nights ensures the night’s blessings are not missed. By focusing on prayer, fasting, charity, Qur’an recitation, and avoiding sins, the believer maximises the chance of encountering this sacred night.
Lailatul Qadr is Allah’s gift—a night of peace, mercy, and immense reward. Recognising its signs encourages the believer to dedicate time, energy, and sincerity to worship, making Ramadan truly transformative.
