AMinor explosion occurred at the Nigerian Army’s Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Thursday, August 14, 2025.
The incident, which took place in a storage facility of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron in the early hours of the day, triggered a small fire.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Appolonia Anele, Acting Director of Army Public Relations, the fire was quickly brought under control through joint efforts by personnel of the 12 Field Engineer Regiment and the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service.
“The Nigerian Army remains committed to the safety and security of its personnel and members of neighbouring communities,” Anele stated in a press release.

Residents of Ilese and nearby communities had initially fled in fear upon seeing smoke coming from the barracks. However, the Army assured that by mid-day, activities within and around the barracks had returned to normal and the incident posed no further threat to the public.

“The event posed no further threat to the public,” Anele said, adding that a comprehensive assessment is underway to determine the extent of material loss. No injuries were reported, and structural damage was limited to the affected building and some stored materials.
The Nigerian Army has appealed to residents of Ilese and adjoining communities to remain calm as a thorough investigation to ascertain the cause of the incident and prevent future occurrences is ongoing.
