THE family of the late President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed profound appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, his wife, Hajia Nana Shettima and a wide array of Nigerian and global dignitaries for the overwhelming support shown before, during, and after the passing of the former President, Mohammedu Buhari.
In a statement issued on behalf of the family, the most senior member, Malam Mamman Daura, conveyed heartfelt gratitude to all who participated in the burial rites and offered prayers for the repose of Buhari’s soul.
“It is truly comforting to receive such immense support from President Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, who not only visited us in Daura but also traveled to the United Kingdom during the mourning period,” the statement read.
“Their presence, along with that of ministers and senior government officials, gave us strength and comfort in this painful time.”
According to the statement released on Sunday, by the late President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the family also thanked President Tinubu for his symbolic gestures, particularly the declaration of a national public holiday and the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in honour of the late President.
International leaders were similarly acknowledged for their condolences. Those specially mentioned include His Majesty King Charles III of England, the United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, the Chairperson of the African Union, the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, and Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd).
“President Muhammadu Buhari’s death is an irreparable loss. Its pain is beyond words. However, the outpouring of love, respect, and solidarity from across Nigeria and around the world has helped us cope with the magnitude of this loss.”
The family extended appreciation to Vice President Shettima and his wife, as well as several state governors, notably the host governor Dr. Dikko Umar Radda of Katsina; Professor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno; and delegations from Adamawa, Kano, Kwara, Lagos, Kaduna, Imo, Nasarawa, Bauchi, Sokoto, and Kebbi States. Former governors, including Dr. Peter Obi, were also acknowledged for their personal condolences and visits.
Also recognized were former Vice Presidents Atiku Abubakar, Architect Namadi Sambo, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, and Ambassador Babagana Kingibe.
Gratitude was extended to President of the Senate Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, and other leaders and members of the National and State Assemblies.
Malam Daura also mentioned the contributions of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume; his predecessor, Boss Mustapha; Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila; and his predecessor, Professor Ibrahim Gambari, along with former and serving cabinet members.
“We are equally appreciative of the solidarity shown by our traditional rulers, especially the Sultan of Sokoto, the Shehu of Borno, the Emir of Gwandu, and our host Emirs of Katsina and Daura, as well as numerous other emirs and chiefs from across Nigeria and neighbouring countries who came in person or sent delegates.”
The family further commended the strong presence of religious leaders from all faiths, as well as community leaders, women groups, youth, and politicians across party lines, noting that their turnout in Daura was both humbling and reassuring.
Acknowledgment was also given to former and current leaders in the security, intelligence, police, and military sectors, as well as permanent secretaries, civil servants, civil society organizations, community associations, and members of the media.
The statement also recognized Nigerian business leaders who personally visited the family in Daura, including Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Abdul Samad Rabiu, Alhaji Muhammadu Indimi, Alhaji Dahiru Mangal, Kola Adesina, and Nasiru Danu.
“We also thank the citizens of Nigeria and those of other nations who were represented by their diplomatic missions. All of Nigeria came out in force to mourn and honour Buhari. We are deeply grateful for every visit, message, and prayer.”
