Former President Olusegun Obasanjo had a busy day on Sunday, celebrating significant birthdays and engaging with influential military leaders.
His first stop was in Benin, Edo State, where he joined family and friends of Chief Gabriel Osawaru Igbinedion, the Esama of Benin Kingdom, to mark his remarkable 90th birthday.
During the thanksgiving Mass, celebrated by the Catholic Archbishop of Benin Archdiocese, Obasanjo conveyed his heartfelt congratulations to the Esama, acknowledging the large turnout as a testament to his enduring legacy.
Following the celebration in Benin, Obasanjo traveled to Minna, Niger State, to visit former President Ibrahim Babangida, who had turned 83 on August 27. Due to prior commitments outside the country, Obasanjo could not attend Babangida’s birthday celebration earlier.
During his visit, he praised Babangida’s contributions and wished him continued good health, noting the significance of their meeting.
The day’s activities culminated in a closed-door meeting with prominent military figures, including Generals Abdulsalami Abubakar and former National Security Advisor Aliyu Gusau.

This meeting convened at Babangida’s residence, reportedly starting around 4:30 PM and concluding by 6:30 PM. While the specifics of the discussions remain undisclosed, sources suggest that they were centered on pressing national issues such as insecurity and the country’s economic challenges.
Obasanjo had flown in from Benin City after celebrating the Esama’s milestone birthday and seamlessly transitioned to this important dialogue with his fellow leaders.
His dual engagements reflect not only a commitment to honoring lifelong relationships but also an active involvement in addressing the critical challenges facing Nigeria today.
