20 traveling medical students abducted by armed men in Benue

The Benue State Police Command has confirmed the kidnap of close to 20 medical students on transit to Enugu around Otukpo in Otukpo Local Government Area, LGA, of the state.

The students where said to be travelling in a convoy of two buses and were coming from the northern part of the country when they ran into the ambush Thursday evening at about 5:30pm.

The Public Relations Officer of the Command, Superintendent, SP, Catherine Anene confirmed that the victims were en route to Enugu for a programme when they ran into the kidnappers around Otukpo.

She said: “Yes it happened yesterday (Thursday) evening around 5:30pm. The Medical students were said to be travelling from Jos axis and were heading to Enugu in two buses, for a programme when they were kidnapped around Otukpo area.

“Though I cannot tell which university they were from but they were medical students on transit.

“I am yet to receive full details of the incident but I can assure you that investigation into the matter has already commenced.”

The Otukpo-Ugbokolo-Otukpa axis of Benue state has become notorious for kidnap of motorists in the last few years.

Only recently the management team of the Benue State Polytechnic, led by the Rector were kidnapped on that axis. This was aside several other victims including Catholic Priests and road users who were abducted for ransom by the armed men who have laid siege on that part of the state.
